Is Kaunas a good place to work?

Lithuania is more than just Vilnius. Especially Kaunas, the second-biggest city located in the center of the country, attracts a growing number of locals and foreigners to work and live in.

In this article, we want to investigate what makes Kaunas an attractive city to work and live in and how it compares to Vilnius and Klaipeda.

Location & Infrastructure

Kaunas is very much in the center of the country. This makes it especially attractive as a logistic hub, hosting many logistic companies and logistic warehouses that are serving all the country and even further.

Kaunas has its own well operating airport, it has a train station serving in all country's direction but also soon to be connected to Rail Baltica and the main highway from Vilnius to the seaside is passing Kaunas. Every direction brings travelers to a new place in short time: If it's the capital within one hour, the seaside in two hours ride or the health resort Birštonas in just 40 minutes.

From a security perspective, Kaunas has a great advantage to Vilnius and Klaipeda, since it is not bordering any countries that are nowadays serving a serious threat to the country and the European Union in general.

Quality of life in Kaunas

Despite being only half the population size of Vilnius, the city is in no way inferior to the capital: Kaunas has a great cultural scene, which made it become the cultural capital of culture in 2022. The city hosts many museums, theaters and street art. The recently opened science island and the modernized Kaunas zoo are on most visitors list.

For locals, Kaunas is the home of Žalgiris, the best basketball team in the country which is playing in a huge central arena that is also hosting many top music acts every year.

Who needs a break from the everyday struggle, can either discover the old town with its numerous restaurants, cafés and bars or take a short retreat in the two central forests, the green lungs of the city.

Prices and housing

Another big advantage of Kaunas is the pricing compared to Vilnius. While the whole country went through a strong inflation and prices are near equal to countries like Germany, Kaunas is still more affordable when it comes to services like car repair, hairdresser etc.

One reason for that is the lower average price per square meter, not only for commercial spaces but also for rent and purchase of flats and houses.

According to the leading real estate platform aruodas.lt, the average rental price for a flat in October 2025 was 12.17 €/sqm compared to 15.02 €/sqm in Vilnius and 10.75 €/sqm in Klaipeda. An even stronger difference to the capital is to observe on flat purchase with an average price per square meter of 2751 € while the price was at a peak 3933 € in Vilnius and 2464 € in Klaipeda.

What would be a great city without job opportunities? Not the case for Kaunas!

Kaunas is the home of several well established startups, big employers and also employers from Vilnius with a second base. It is comparably easy to find an English-speaking job in Kaunas.

The list of known employers includes Senukai, Camelia pharmacy, Kauno grūdai, Sanitex, Continental, Affidea, Kautra, and Eurokos.
